Tottenham Complete Club-Record Deal for Sandro Tonali
Tottenham Hotspur have secured the signing of Italy international Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a club‑record agreement worth up to £100 million. The deal includes an initial payment of £92.5 million, with a further £7.5 million payable based on performance‑related add‑ons. Newcastle had previously turned down an offer around £80 million before the clubs reached this final arrangement.
The 26‑year‑old midfielder said his choice was simple, despite being linked with several other teams.
“I’m very happy to be here,” Tonali remarked. “People mentioned four or five clubs, but there was only one that felt right.”
He added that a lengthy conversation with head coach Roberto De Zerbi convinced him instantly.
“I spoke to the head coach for close to two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and our football. It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham,” he said.
Tonali recalled enjoying the atmosphere whenever he faced Spurs as an opponent and expressed eagerness to start the new season.
This capture marks Tottenham’s second major summer acquisition, following the £85 million signing of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United.
Tonali originally joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023 for £55 million. Shortly after arriving, he received a ten‑month suspension from the Italian Football Federation for breaching betting regulations. He returned to become a key figure for the Magpies, helping them lift the Carabao Cup in 2025 – ending a 70‑year wait for a major domestic trophy.
In a farewell note to Newcastle supporters, Tonali thanked the staff, his teammates, and especially head coach Eddie Howe for their belief and guidance.
“This city gave me more than football. It gave me a home, moments I’ll hold forever, and people I will always be grateful for,” he wrote.
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi praised the new arrival, saying he had admired Tonali for years since watching him rise through the Brescia youth system.
“Given his qualities, there was plenty of interest in Sandro this summer. However, he was clear about wanting to join Tottenham, and I know our fans will love what he brings to the team,” De Zerbi added.
Spurs have been among the busiest clubs in the transfer market after finishing 17th in the Premier League last season, just two points above relegation. Free‑transfer arrivals Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have bolstered the squad, while the club could spend a combined £237 million on Jan Paul van Hecke, Fernandes and Tonali.
Sporting director Johan Lange expressed confidence in Tonali’s readiness for the challenge.
“He possesses outstanding technical quality, real football intelligence, and the character to thrive in a demanding, high‑pressure environment,” Lange stated.
