Cristiano Ronaldo Confirms 2026 FIFA World Cup Will Be His Last International Tournament
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will mark the end of his World Cup journey. He made the announcement ahead of Portugal’s Round of 16 match against Spain, saying he feels fulfilled with what he has achieved in football and wants to savour every moment of the tournament.
The 41‑year‑old explained that his age influenced the decision, describing the 2026 edition as the right time to conclude his World Cup chapter.
“This will be my last World Cup, but let’s hope tomorrow isn’t my last game. The day will come [when I retire from international football]. But I’ll be honest: whatever happens tomorrow, Cristiano will leave with a clear conscience, 100%, no, 1,000% because of everything in football.”
Ronaldo added that he does not need the trophy to validate his career; his motivation comes from a pure love of the game. He pointed out that he has already scored three goals in the tournament, joking that he’s not doing too badly.
He described this World Cup as the most memorable of his career, citing the passionate atmosphere and strong emotions both on and off the pitch.
“It’s been fantastic. It goes beyond the pitch. This is the World Cup I’ll remember the most because of people’s passion. It’s even more this time; I don’t know why. It’s been, emotionally, the best. I’ve enjoyed it very much.”
Ronaldo concluded that winning the World Cup would not change who he is, noting that while Portugal possesses the quality to win, only one nation can lift the trophy, and age brings maturity and experience.
