US Congressman Pledges Close Watch on Nigeria’s 2027 Election
Representative Riley Moore of the United States Congress announced that the United States will closely monitor Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 general election.
When questioned about his awareness of the vote and possible US support, Moore replied, “We will be paying close attention to Nigeria’s 2027 election.” He added that Washington will observe both the results and the conduct of the polls.
He stressed that the administration will scrutinise how the elections unfold and are executed, promising vigilant oversight.
Concerns Raised Over Election Readiness
In contrast, Bolaji Abdullahi, the national spokesman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), warned that the 2027 election might not take place at all.
Abdullahi pointed to widespread hunger under President Bola Tinubu’s government as a factor that could suppress voter turnout and open the door to rigging.
He also highlighted rising insecurity, noting that violence could prevent voting in many regions.
A major worry, he said, is the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) procurement process. Many of the required materials are sourced offshore, and if funding or purchases have not been secured, the election could be jeopardised.
Abdullahi expressed fear that INEC may be unprepared, either deliberately or by accident, and warned that any attempt to rig the vote could be followed by calls for legal redress that would not resolve the underlying problems.
