Akpabio Justifies PDP‑to‑APC Switch
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has offered a fresh explanation for his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). He said that a progressive‑minded person like himself belongs in a progressive party, and that the APC’s approach made him realise he had been in the wrong party all along.
“A progressive‑minded person like me should belong to a progressive family,” Akpabio stated. “When the APC came to me, I discovered that was my group and that I was in the wrong party, called PDP. So, I took my exit early and joined the progressives.”
Timeline of the Defection
Akpabio formally left the PDP on 8 August 2018, shortly after resigning as Senate Minority Leader. His move was celebrated at a mega‑rally held at the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium in Akwa Ibom State, where he was officially welcomed into the ruling APC.
