A Nigerian woman ignited a heated discussion online after describing how her husband’s older brother turned down the dishes she served during his visit.
Her experience struck a chord with many social media users, sparking conversations about hospitality, personal food preferences, and the expectations placed on hosts within families.
She explained that her brother-in-law had traveled from the eastern region of the country, prompting her to quickly prepare a meal using soup she had stored in her freezer.
First, she bought semo and paired it with the soup, but her guest declined, stating he only eats fufu. She then went out to purchase fufu, prepared it, and served it to him.
Guest Rejects the Meal
She recalled, ‘Yesterday humbled me. My husband’s eldest brother arrived from the East, so I rushed to a nearby shop to get semo since I already had soup in the freezer. I served it and he asked what swallow this was. I said semo. He replied he doesn’t eat semo. I wondered if eba would work; he insisted he only eats fufu. I hurried out again, bought fufu, warmed it, and presented it. He touched it and exclaimed, “Bia nwanyi, why did you give me such hard fufu? Don’t you know you have to pound it until it’s soft?’ I was left speechless, thinking, “Pound fufu in 2026?” My own husband has never complained about the texture of fufu before.’
Online Reactions Split
The post attracted mixed reactions online. Some users sympathized with the woman, praising her effort to accommodate her guest, while others argued that visitors should politely communicate their dietary preferences ahead of time. A few suggested she could have asked for guidance on how to prepare the fufu properly before serving it.
