Rhodes-Vivour Confirms Independent 2027 Lagos Governorship Run
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship hopeful for Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has stated that his ambition for the 2027 election will not depend on any backing from former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi or the Obidient movement.
When questioned about how he intends to campaign without Obi’s support, Rhodes-Vivour replied succinctly: “By doing the work.” He emphasized that his political profile and grassroots network have expanded significantly since his first Lagos governorship attempt in 2023.
“The Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of 2023 is not the same person we see in 2026. We have been putting in the effort, constructing structures in communities, and embedding ourselves firmly. We stand for the people,” he declared.
He also highlighted his ongoing engagement with Lagos residents impacted by state‑wide demolitions, noting that these interactions have strengthened his ties to local communities and refined his vision for governance.
Regarding his relationship with Peter Obi, Rhodes-Vivour clarified that there is no rift between them. He described their 2023 collaboration as a successful broad‑based coalition.
“We had a fantastic run in 2023. His Excellency Peter Obi is a fantastic candidate, and there are no issues between us. I believed Lagos required a coalition that cuts across generations, tribes, and diverse experiences — and we achieved that,” he added.
Explaining his decision to remain within the ADC despite internal party challenges, he said the coalition the party built in Lagos constitutes a credible opposition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“We joined the coalition because we realized that a fragmented opposition would struggle to unseat the current government. In Lagos State we have successfully built something I am proud of,” he said.
Looking ahead to the 2027 governorship election, Rhodes-Vivour expressed confidence in his prospects, stressing that his strategy is rooted in planning rather than sentiment.
“I am very sure that we will put up a strong showing in this election and, by God’s grace, we will win,” he affirmed.
He also dismissed notions that his support is limited to social media, insisting that his popularity is backed by a solid grassroots presence cultivated across Lagos communities.
