Delta Assembly Declares Udu Seat Vacant
The Delta State House of Assembly declared the Udu Constituency seat vacant on Tuesday after lawmaker Collins Ogbetamah announced his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaker Dennis Guwor read Ogbetamah’s resignation letter, dated June 19, during plenary. Following the reading, Majority Leader Emeka Nwaobi moved a motion citing the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to vacate the seat and urged INEC to organise a by‑election. Lawmakers unanimously backed the motion, after which the Speaker formally declared the seat vacant.
Other Legislative Actions
In the same sitting, the Assembly passed the State Public and Private Properties Protection Amendment Bill for second reading. The amendment aims to strengthen protection of public and private assets, recover misappropriated property, set up an enforcement task force and improve coordination with security agencies.
Speaker Guwor referred the bill to the Joint House Committees on Housing, Urban Renewal, Lands and Survey, directing them to submit a report before July 17.
Financial Reports Received
The House also received the 2025 audited financial statements and reports from the Office of the Auditor‑General for Local Government covering the state’s 25 local government areas. These documents have been forwarded to the House Committee on Public Accounts for further review.
