PDP Forms Legal Team After Arrest of Akwa Ibom Publicity Secretary
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the arrest of its Akwa Ibom State publicity secretary, Ewa Okpo, saying the detention followed a petition lodged by Senator Effiong Bob over what the party describes as a lawful exercise of free speech.
The party confirmed that Okpo is currently being interviewed by officers at the Quick Intervention Unit in Ikot Akpan Abia, and expressed hope that the police will handle the matter professionally.
The PDP criticised what it sees as attempts by influential figures to deploy security agencies to harass and intimidate perceived political opponents, warning that such actions will ultimately backfire.
In response, the interim national working committee’s chairman has instructed the national legal adviser to assemble a high‑powered legal team to defend Okpo and to support another party member in Akwa Ibom who, according to the PDP, is also being targeted for opposing free speech.
The PDP pledged to continue shielding its officials and members from any arrest, intimidation or threat that arises from the legitimate exercise of their constitutional rights.
