Households in several parts of Nigeria are feeling relief as the retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, commonly known as cooking gas, begins to fall. The decline follows improved supply conditions and softer depot prices that have emerged after weeks of sharp increases.
Price Trends in Major Cities
Market checks indicate that cooking gas now sells between ₦1,100 and ₦1,350 per kilogramme in Lagos, Ibadan and Abeokuta. In Benin City, Port Harcourt and Warri, the price band is ₦1,150 to ₦1,400/kg, while Onitsha and Enugu see rates from ₦1,200 to ₦1,450/kg. Abuja consumers pay between ₦1,250 and ₦1,500/kg.
Regional Price Variations
According to Edu Inyang, National President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, northern cities such as Kano and Kaduna currently record prices of ₦1,300 to ₦1,550/kg. In Maiduguri and parts of the North‑East, costs remain as high as ₦1,650/kg. He noted that the national retail range now stands at roughly ₦1,100 to ₦1,650 per kilogramme, with neighbourhood retailers sometimes charging slightly more where logistics expenses stay elevated.
Cost of Cylinder Refills
Based on the current per‑kilogramme rates, a 5 kg cylinder refill costs between ₦5,500 and ₦8,250, while a 6 kg cylinder ranges from ₦6,600 to ₦9,900. For a 12.5 kg cylinder, consumers should expect to pay between ₦13,750 and ₦20,625, depending on location and retailer pricing.
Industry Outlook
Ayobami Olarinoye, National Chairman of the LPG Retailers Branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, said normalcy is gradually returning to the sector. He explained that inflow and supply are improving, leading to greater availability and a gradual downward trend in prices. Marketers purchase gas at ₦1,300–₦1,500 per kilogramme and sell it to consumers at ₦1,600–₦1,800/kg, reflecting typical margins.
Industry stakeholders remain optimistic that sustained local supply and steady imports could push prices lower in the coming weeks, provided there are no major disruptions to distribution or import channels.
