FIFA Dismisses Match-Fixing Claims Over Austria-Algeria World Cup Draw
FIFA has indicated that it will not launch an investigation into allegations that the World Cup group-stage match between Austria and Algeria was fixed to guarantee qualification for both teams.
The controversy arose after the teams played out a dramatic 3-3 draw, with Austria scoring a 96th‑minute equaliser that secured their place alongside Algeria in the knockout stage.
Prior to the equaliser, Riyad Mahrez had put Algeria ahead three minutes earlier, only moments later. The build‑up, only for Austria to respond with virtually the final kick of the game. The equalising goal came after a patient five‑minute sequence involving 110 consecutive passes.
At one point Austria appeared destined for elimination, and emotions flared on the touchline as Marko Arnautovic was seen arguing with members of the Algerian bench and gesturing in frustration.
The result saw Austria finish as Group runners‑up and Algeria advance in third place. Critics suggested that both sides had settled for a mutually beneficial outcome, accusing Algeria of allowing the late equaliser.
However, according to Mirror reports, FIFA has dismissed those suggestions and said it is not concerned about the match or its result.
Austria manager Ralf Rangnick also rejected any notion that the game was staged. Mahrez acknowledged that the closing moments felt awkward but insisted he had to play competitively.
“It was a bit awkward, to be honest. We were playing wide and they were sitting, but in the last minute someone plays a ball, he turns, and I have to make the run,” Mahrez said. “I have to respect football. The ball arrives in front of the keeper and I have to score, I have to try to score. I know it’s an awkward situation, but it’s football, and I have to respect it. And the good thing for them (Austria) is that they score and they qualify. We both qualify, and that’s the most important thing.”
Austria now faces a challenging round‑of‑32 clash against European champions Spain. A victory would set up a round‑of‑16 meeting with either Portugal or Croatia.
Algeria, meanwhile, will meet Switzerland in the knockout stage and could encounter Argentina in the quarter‑finals if both sides progress.
