The group stage of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup has concluded, leaving 16 teams eliminated and 32 advancing to the knockout round.
Asian Football Confederation (AFC)
The AFC suffered the biggest disappointment, with seven of its nine representatives knocked out. Only Australia and Japan progressed to the Round of 32.
Confederation of African Football (CAF)
Africa produced one of its strongest World Cup group‑stage performances, with eight of its nine sides reaching the knockout round. However, South Africa fell 1‑0 to co‑hosts Canada in the Round of 32, leaving seven African teams still alive.
Union of European Football Associations (UEFA)
Europe remains the best‑represented confederation, losing only three of its record 16 entrants; 13 European nations continue in the tournament.
CONCACAF
Three CONCACAF sides exited the tournament. The United States, Canada and Mexico remain as the confederation’s survivors.
CONMEBOL
South American Football Confederation once again impressed, with five of its six teams advancing beyond the group stage.
Oceania Football Confederation (OFC)
Oceania’s only representative, New Zealand, failed to reach the knockout stage, marking the OFC’s elimination.
Current Standings in the Round of 32
With 32 teams still in contention, UEFA leads the field with 13 nations, followed by CAF (8), CONMEBOL (5), CONCACAF (3) and AFC (2).
