Folashade Oluwafemiayo Named Team Nigeria Captain for 2026 Commonwealth Games
Nigeria’s celebrated Paralympic and world champion, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, has been appointed captain of Team Nigeria for the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The announcement positions one of the nation’s most decorated athletes at the forefront of its delegation as the Games approach, scheduled from 23 July to 2 August 2026.
According to the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, the selection was based on merit and Oluwafemiayo’s exceptional track record.
He stated, “We are deliberate in choosing our team captain. Folashade Oluwafemiayo is the ideal candidate, having consistently shown outstanding professionalism, resilience and excellence throughout her illustrious career.”
“She is a multiple gold medallist, a former world champion and one of Nigeria’s most decorated para‑athletes. Her leadership qualities and winning mentality inspire every member of Team Nigeria.”
Oluwafemiayo is recognised globally as a leading para powerlifter. A four‑time world champion and two‑time Paralympic gold medallist, she has captured titles at the Paralympic Games, World Championships and Commonwealth Games while setting numerous world records.
Among her achievements is a gold medal at the 2021 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, where she lifted a world‑record 152.5 kg. She also secured heavyweight gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Her appointment also underscores the continued success of Nigeria’s para‑athletes, who have contributed a significant portion of the country’s medal haul at the Paralympics, Commonwealth Games, African Games and World Championships.
