Adewale Adebayo, presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Nigeria’s 2023 elections, has asserted that political officeholders aren’t immune to criticism despite holding government positions. During an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Adebayo dismissed military rule as an ineffective solution to national challenges.
The politician urged Nigerians to defend the democratic system. He warned that political leaders might soon experience insecurity of tenure. This would mirror the existing insecurity affecting citizens’ lives and property nationwide.
Democracy’s Fragile State
“Democracy remains fragile globally,” Adebayo stated. He highlighted threats from military interventions and electoral suppression. “Good governance provides the strongest protection against coups and lawlessness.”
Adebayo stressed that all citizens share responsibility for preserving civilian governance. He insisted that political power doesn’t guarantee security for officeholders. The SDP chieftain drew parallels between citizens’ vulnerabilities and potential political instability.
“Just as Nigerians face security challenges,” Adebayo concluded, “the political class may soon confront insecurity regarding their tenure.” He emphasized this underscores the urgent need for improved governance nationwide.
