Why Atiku Selected Amaechi as His Running Mate
A recent disclosure has shed light on the motivations behind Atiku Abubakar’s choice of former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi as his running mate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket.
Sources speaking to the Nigerian Tribune explained that Atiku evaluated candidates from the South‑East and South‑West before turning his attention to the South‑South region.
The decision was influenced by Amaechi’s strong political network, built during his tenure as governor of Rivers State and later as a minister in Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
Party insiders noted that picking a candidate from the South‑East would offer little advantage, especially with Peter Obi already representing another party in that zone.
An initial plan to choose a South‑West governor was abandoned after analysts concluded that voters in that region would be unwilling to trade the presidency for the vice presidency.
Consequently, the focus shifted to the South‑South, where Amaechi’s connections could boost the ticket’s attractiveness and help secure crucial votes.
A source emphasized the leadership’s resolve to avoid repeating the 2023 PDP experience, where feelings of marginalisation caused internal rifts. “This time every member is a stakeholder, and we will work closely with everyone,” the source said.
Although Atiku had intended to announce Amaechi immediately, a brief overseas trip delayed the unveiling. Supporters were assured that the former minister would be presented to the public once the candidate returned.
The ADC believes that selecting a running mate from the South‑South is a strategic move that will broaden its appeal and draw vital support across the country.
