Thomas Tuchel Admits England Still Trails Top Nations
England manager Thomas Tuchel has acknowledged that the Three Lions still have work to do before they can consistently match the standards set by football’s most successful nations.
Gap Highlighted Ahead of France Third‑Place Play‑off
Speaking before England’s FIFA World Cup 2026 third‑place play‑off against France, Tuchel pointed out that Argentina, France and Spain have built winning cultures over many years, something England is still striving to achieve.
Tuchel’s Comments on the Current Gap
“I think the gap exists because of the titles that Argentina, France, and Spain have as national teams and what they have built over many years with their coaches and players,” Tuchel said.
“There is still a slight gap that we have to close. It shows in the expectations of these countries to win the World Cup and reach the finals. We have dreamed about it, pushed for it, and competed for it, but there remains a gap in how we play football under pressure and implement ourselves at the next level.”
England’s Aim for a Positive Finish
England will now look to finish their World Cup campaign on a positive note when they face France in the battle for third place at 10 p.m. later today, July 18.
