Sowore Claims Tinubu Feels Threatened by His Grassroots Support Ahead of 2027 Elections
The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, alleged that President Bola Tinubu is “mortally afraid” of his rising popularity among ordinary Nigerians as the 2027 general elections approach.
Sowore made the remarks on Thursday while speaking with journalists outside the Federal High Court in Abuja, after the court warned that it could close his defence if he fails to proceed with his case at the next adjourned date.
During the hearing, the judge cautioned Sowore against delaying his defence, indicating that the case could be foreclosed should he not continue with the trial.
The activist maintained his innocence and insisted that the legal action against him is politically motivated.
Addressing reporters after the proceedings, Sowore said, “But we know the big deal. The big deal is that there is an election that is coming. Tinubu is mortally, mortally afraid of my popularity with the grassroots.”
He added that his political movement continues to attract support without resorting to vote‑buying or inducements such as bread, soap, rice, bitter kola, Tom Tom, kuli‑kuli or akara.
Sowore reiterated his ambition to provide leadership capable of transforming Nigeria and strengthening democratic institutions, including the judiciary.
The case against him stems from social media posts in which he allegedly referred to President Tinubu as “a criminal.” The Federal Government contends the publication was defamatory and has asked the court to rule accordingly.
The matter was adjourned, with the court warning that Sowore’s defence could be deemed closed if he does not appear at the next hearing.
