Segun Showunmi, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has vehemently dismissed recent claims. He believes a single presidential term is insufficient. It cannot resolve the myriad challenges currently facing Nigeria.
Speaking during a Thursday interview on TVC, Showunmi declared his firm stance. He stated that anyone proposing a single term to fix Nigeria’s deep-seated problems is either deceitful or fraudulent.
He further emphasized his point. “Anyone who claims a single term is enough,” he stated, “to address all the fundamental challenges plaguing our nation, such a person is either a liar or a fraud.” Showunmi criticized such proponents. He noted they often boast about the ease of performing a difficult job. Yet, they consistently fail to articulate their actual methods or plans.
Showunmi referenced the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan. This example, he argued, illustrates the inherent impossibility of the single-term claim. Jonathan’s situation was unique. He had assumed power following the passing of Umaru Yar’Adua. His experience, Showunmi explained, could have potentially lent credence to the idea of a single term.
Jonathan completed the remainder of Yar’Adua’s term. He then served his legitimate term from 2011 to 2015. Showunmi questioned the difficulty in securing even one extra term for him. He pointed out a significant consequence. The attempt to force Jonathan into a second term proved disastrous. This effort contributed to the destruction of a major political party. That party, he noted, has not recovered since.
