Rodri Apologises to Bernardo Silva After Heated Exchange in Spain-Portugal World Cup Clash
Rodri has admitted he was wrong after his fiery exchange with Bernardo Silva during the 2026 FIFA World Cup last-16 match between Spain and Portugal.
The Manchester City teammates clashed briefly deep into stoppage time as Portugal pushed desperately for a late equaliser in Spain’s 1-0 win.
Moments after Bernardo Silva failed to connect with a crucial header, Rodri walked over and gave him a playful tap while celebrating the missed chance.
The gesture angered the Portugal midfielder, who quickly confronted his club teammate before players from both sides intervened to calm the situation just before the final whistle.
Despite the tense moment, Rodri said there were no hard feelings after the match, insisting he apologised immediately and the matter was settled on the pitch.
“I made a mistake because I celebrated when he missed. I apologised to him immediately, and it was accepted because of the trust we have, that’s all,” he said.
The incident briefly overshadowed another impressive display from Spain, which booked their place in the World Cup quarter-finals thanks to Mikel Merino’s decisive goal.
It is Spain’s first appearance in the last eight of the World Cup since lifting the trophy in 2010. Luis de la Fuente’s side will now face the Belgium national football team in the quarter-finals on July 10.
