Rivers State Governor’s Brother Announces 2027 Governorship Run
Blessing Fubara, the brother of incumbent Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election under the banner of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking ahead of the NDC primary election, he described himself as a “ready, competent and energetic” candidate capable of returning peace, stability and economic prosperity to Rivers State.
He lamented that the state has suffered politically and economically in recent years, saying:
“We have lost opportunities. We have lost investments. We have lost our dignity as a people. We have lost our pride as Rivers people.”
Fubara called for a collective “uprising” across political and ethnic lines to reclaim what he described as the state’s lost glory, insisting that Rivers State is not a conquered territory.
He pledged to preserve the existing zoning arrangement, stressing that the Rivers South‑East Senatorial District must complete its eight‑year tenure.
“We have vowed to keep the peaceful existence of the political rotation of Rivers State according to our founding fathers by our districts,” he said, adding that he intends to serve a single four‑year term to deliver the expected development.
While acknowledging that his campaign may not match the financial muscle of rivals, Fubara argued that popular support remains his greatest advantage:
“We might not challenge the financial capacity that they have, but we know that we have the people, so we are richer in capacity.”
He urged supporters across the state’s 23 local government areas to mobilise massively for the NDC primary and appealed to his “elder brother” in the race to step down in favour of the people’s uprising.
“It sets a very wrong and dangerous precedent if we alter the senatorial rotation of our leadership and governance in the state,” he warned.
