Tinubu Secures APC Ticket for 2027
President Bola Tinubu has clinched the All Progressives Congress presidential ticket for the 2027 election, clearing the way for fresh discussions about his choice of running mate.
Shettima’s Loyalty and Political Weight
Unlike the contested 2022 APC primary, where Tinubu faced challenges from figures such as former Vice‑President Yemi Osinbajo and ex‑Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, the recent nomination process was described by observers as a smooth passage for the incumbent president.
With the ticket now in his hands, attention has turned to whether Tinubu will retain Vice‑President Kashim Shettima or opt for a different partner.
The original decision to pair Tinubu with Shettima in 2022 sparked criticism because both are Muslims, with opponents arguing that the ticket did not reflect Nigeria’s religious diversity and hinted at an alleged Islamisation agenda.
As the 2027 election draws nearer, the debate over a Muslim‑Muslim ticket has softened, partly due to the influence of First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, a Christian and pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, whose presence has diluted those arguments.
Political analysts quoted by Vanguard note that Shettima’s steadfast loyalty could work strongly in his favour. They describe him as one of the most loyal deputies in Nigeria’s democratic history, consistently defending and interpreting Tinubu’s policies without open confrontation.
Observers say the vice‑president has studied the president’s political style and has avoided actions that could be seen as disloyal, thereby earning Tinubu’s confidence.
Another factor favouring Shettima is his political weight in the northern part of the country. Analysts warn that dropping him at this stage could pose risks for Tinubu, given Shettima’s influence and support base in a key electoral region.
Tinubu, widely regarded as a master political strategist, may view it as unwise to replace a running mate who has remained loyal and commands considerable followership in the north.
Furthermore, the cordial relationship between the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, and the vice‑president’s wife, Hajia Nana Shettima, adds another layer of stability. Mrs Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative, which focuses on women and girls, has Nana Shettima serving as its national vice‑chairperson and often representing the First Lady at outreach programmes nationwide.
Despite the usual political manoeuvring and quiet negotiations, observers believe it would be surprising if Tinubu decides to drop Shettima ahead of the 2027 election. However, they also remind that in politics, nothing is ever certain.
