Tobi Amusan Posts Season‑Best 12.28s in Xiamen Diamond League While Enekwechi Starts Shot Put Campaign
Nigeria’s sprint hurdles queen, Tobi Amusan, delivered her fastest run of the season on Saturday, finishing second in a world‑class women’s 100m hurdles race at the Diamond League meeting in Xiamen, China.
Amusan’s Performance
Competing at Egret Stadium, Amusan crossed the line in 12.28 seconds, shaving 0.13 seconds off her previous season’s best of 12.41s.
She was beaten only by American record holder Masai Russell, who stormed to victory in 12.14s – one of the quickest times ever recorded in the event.
Russell’s performance came within two hundredths of a second of the world record of 12.12s set by Amusan at the 2022 World Championships in Oregon.
Devynne Charlton finished third in 12.37s, while Megan Simmonds, Ditaji Kambundji and Ackera Nugent followed in a stacked field. Danielle Williams placed seventh.
Amusan arrived in Xiamen looking to build momentum after claiming the African title and securing third place at the Shanghai Diamond League. Her latest outing suggests she is steadily finding rhythm ahead of the major championships later in the season.
Enekwechi Opens Shot Put Campaign
Elsewhere, Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi opened his 2026 Diamond League season with a fifth‑place finish in the men’s shot put.
The African record holder managed a best throw of 21.14 metres in a contest packed with elite throwers as he began his chase for qualification points for the Diamond League final.
Rajindra Campbell won the event with 22.34m, ahead of Jordan Geist and world record holder Ryan Crouser. Tom Walsh finished sixth.
Enekwechi, chasing a third straight appearance in the Diamond League final, holds a season’s best of 21.74m and the African record of 22.10m. The Nigerian is expected to target bigger throws in the coming meetings as the season gathers pace.
