The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has declared his intention to transform northern Nigeria should he be elected president. He said he understands the region’s challenges and possesses the capacity to drive meaningful change.
Priorities: Security, Prosperity, and Unity
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, outlined that his administration would focus on three pillars: enhancing security, stimulating economic prosperity, and reinforcing national unity. He emphasized that these goals are especially vital for communities long plagued by social and economic difficulties.
Expressing confidence in his ability to lead the region’s development, Obi stated:
“I will change the North. I have an idea of what is happening in the North, and nobody can drive that process in Nigeria better than me. I will work with them and ensure the unity, security and prosperity they desire are achieved.”
He stressed that lasting progress in the North cannot be achieved by imposing policies from Abuja. Instead, his approach involves close cooperation with local residents and traditional leaders to craft solutions that reflect the realities on the ground.
Obi also called on all Nigerians to set aside past divisions and work together toward a brighter future. He warned that allowing historical grievances to dictate the nation’s direction would only hinder progress.
“There must be a time to know that we are the same. We must come together. Yes, we are listening, but we must not be trapped in it. They must not deprive us tomorrow,” he added.
Concluding his remarks, Obi reiterated his belief that effective leadership, inclusive policies, and collective effort can overcome Nigeria’s current challenges and pave the way for a new, prosperous nation.
