NPFL Clubs Gear Up for the 2026/27 Season
Nigeria Premier Football League clubs are intensifying their preparations for the upcoming 2026/27 season. Teams are bolstering their squads, making strategic off‑field decisions, and monitoring potential signings to strengthen their chances of success.
Wikki Tourists Appoint Bala Abubakar as Technical Adviser
The Bauchi‑based Wikki Tourists have announced Bala Abubakar as their new technical adviser. Unveiled in Bauchi on July 4, Abubakar holds a CAF B Licence and brings a wealth of experience from previous spells with Lobi Stars, Niger Tornadoes, Katsina United and Doma United. The club believes his tactical acumen will help them secure a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League after missing out on promotion last season.
Shooting Stars Sign Midfielder Olakunle Akala
Shooting Stars have strengthened their midfield by signing Olakunle Akala from Kano Pillars on a one‑year deal. Akala, who played a prominent role for the Kano side last season, expressed his gratitude in an emotional farewell message:
“Special thanks to our team leaders, coaches, teammates and our amazing supporters for the support you have given me throughout this great organisation. It’s really a pride for me to wear the Kano Pillars shirt.”
“Thank you for making me feel like home from the first day I came. I will never forget the beautiful memories I had and the memories I built here.”
“As I start a new chapter in my football life, I walk with a heart full of gratitude and respect to all related to Kano Pillars.”
Other Transfer Movements Across the League
Central African Republic goalkeeper Alladoum Kolimba, whose contract with Remo Stars has expired, is attracting interest from Katsina United. Kolimba kept 16 clean sheets in 36 appearances for the Chanji Boys in 2023 and earned several Man of the Match awards. Nine‑time NPFL champions Enyimba are also monitoring the experienced shot‑stopper.
Ranchers Bees have secured the services of experienced left‑back Faisal Sani on a two‑year contract from Katsina United. Sani, who also featured for the 2025 NPFL champions Remo Stars, is expected to bolster Kaduna’s defence as the club prepares for life back in the top flight.
Sunshine Stars Deal with AWOL Player
Sunshine Stars have declared forward David Igoche Absent Without Official Leave (AWOL) after he failed to report for pre‑season training following the team’s June resumption. In a statement signed by club manager Gabriel Aborowa, the Nigeria National League side warned other clubs, agents and stakeholders not to enter transfer negotiations involving Igoche without the club’s approval. Sunshine Stars emphasised that Igoche remains under contract and continues to receive his contractual entitlements while they prepare for the 2026/27 campaign.
