When the bride announced her upcoming wedding in Benin City, the lady explained that traveling would be costly and difficult, yet she still purchased the ₦40,000 Aso Ebi fabric and helped with other wedding-related expenses.
She recalled, “I spent about ₦75,000 on her wedding. Before joining the group, I told her I might not be able to travel to Benin, and she said it was fine.”
The Gift Request and Refusal
As the wedding date drew near, she informed the bride that she could not attend because the transport fare to Benin would be at least ₦50,000.
The bride then requested that she send the transport money as a wedding gift instead.
The bride reportedly said, “Since you aren’t coming, you should send the transport money as a gift. If you can’t manage ₦50,000, at least send ₦25,000.” The lady responded that she did not have the funds.
Aftermath and Online Reaction
Following the wedding, the bride accused certain members of the Aso Ebi group of lacking genuine happiness for her, leading her to block the lady and another friend on social media.
The incident has sparked a heated debate online, with many Nigerians questioning whether guests should be expected to give extra cash gifts after already covering substantial wedding costs.
