Niger State Governor Bago Denies APC Defections Stem from Persecution
Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago of Niger State has dismissed allegations that members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are leaving the party because they face persecution. He stressed that those who quit are doing so for personal and individual reasons, not due to any hostility from the party or government.
“There is no persecution in Niger State. Nobody is being targeted,” Bago said. He added that the APC remains united in the state and that reconciliation efforts with aggrieved members are continuing at the grassroots level. The governor noted that post‑primary disagreements are normal, which is why he continually emphasizes dialogue and unity.
Bago pointed to the strong attendance at a recent party meeting as evidence that many former members are returning. He expressed confidence that more will rejoin ahead of the 2027 general election and reiterated his goal of eliminating opposition in Niger State by that time. He urged all APC members to mobilize support in their constituencies, campaigning not only for themselves but also for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
