NDC Warns Against Opportunists Riding Obi‑Kwankwaso Popularity
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will not allow aspirants to take advantage of the popularity of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso simply to win elections in 2027.
Speaking on Channels Television, NDC spokesperson Osa Director explained that the party has learned from what happened with the Labour Party during the 2023 elections and will not permit a repeat.
During the screening process, the NDC noticed a surge of applicants — especially members of the diaspora who have never participated in politics — rushing to obtain nomination forms. Director noted that many appear motivated by the desire to “ride the Obi‑Kwankwaso wave” and by the perception that the NDC offers a vibrant alternative to the current political situation.
He assured that the party will conduct a thorough vetting exercise, examining each candidate’s pedigree, commitment to the party’s principles, and actual presence on the ground. “If you don’t have a verifiable pedigree and dedication to the NDC’s values, you will not receive a ticket,” Director said.
The spokesperson also pointed out that, in the past, some obscure candidates who rode similar waves later defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The NDC intends to guard against such outcomes by ensuring only genuinely committed individuals represent the party in 2027.
