A woman has ignited online discussion after describing how her mother confronted and physically punished a school employee who had harshly disciplined her younger sister over a poor quiz result.
Story of punishment triggers online reaction
She explained that the school contacted her mother to report that her sister had abruptly fallen ill and needed to go home.
Doubting the sudden sickness, the mother hurried back from work and found that the girl had allegedly been severely whipped by a female staff member commonly called “aunty” in many Nigerian schools.
“One ‘Aunty’ at school flogged my sister mercilessly for failing a quiz, to the point that she vomited. They had to send her home because she started running a fever,” she recounted.
“She went out, bought four canes, went to the school, and caught the aunty off guard in the compound. She broke all the canes on her body and continued using her hands. The aunty felt the heat that day,” she added.
Incident renews debate on corporal punishment
The account has revived conversations about corporal punishment in Nigerian schools, with numerous commentators denouncing harsh discipline toward children.
Incidents of severe punishment in schools have repeatedly provoked public anger in recent years.
In 2023, several parents and advocacy groups urged tighter oversight of teachers after videos surfaced showing pupils injured from excessive flogging.
The narrator also said that the staff member involved was dismissed by the school administration shortly after the confrontation.
