Manchester United Confirm Manuel Ugarte Knee Ligament Injury
Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Manuel Ugarte suffered a knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay in their World Cup group‑stage defeat to Spain in Guadalajara.
The 25‑year‑old was stretchered off after twisting his knee awkwardly while attempting a tackle in the build‑up to Spain’s winning goal, prompting immediate concerns about the seriousness of the injury.
After being examined by Uruguay’s medical staff on Saturday, Ugarte will return to Manchester for further assessment before the club decides on the next steps in his treatment.
Uruguayan reports have suggested a possible cruciate ligament tear, which could keep him out for several months, but United are awaiting their own medical evaluation before confirming the exact extent of the damage.
The club released a statement: “Manchester United can confirm that Manuel Ugarte has suffered a knee ligament injury whilst representing Uruguay in Friday’s World Cup group‑stage match against Spain. Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timescale. Everyone wishes Manuel a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way.”
The setback arrives at a pivotal moment in Ugarte’s Old Trafford career. Signed from Paris Saint‑Germain for £50.8 million in 2024, the Uruguayan has struggled to cement a regular place and has not appeared since starting the Premier League home loss to Leeds on 13 April.
He had travelled to the tournament with the possibility of attracting interest from other clubs, as United were expected to reshape their midfield in the summer window. A permanent move or loan had been widely anticipated, but the injury now clouds those prospects.
United’s priority is now the player’s recovery. The club has already agreed a £35 million deal to sign Atalanta’s Ederson, although his medical has been postponed after a late call‑up to Brazil’s World Cup squad; the transfer is expected to be completed once Brazil’s campaign ends and after the mandatory three‑week break.
United have also been linked with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, but withdrew due to the overall cost, while negotiations with West Ham over Portugal international Mateus Fernandes remain unresolved. Tottenham are also reported to be interested.
Bournemouth’s Alex Scott stays on United’s shortlist, and Brighton previously turned down an approach for Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba.
