Iyabo Obasanjo Rejoins PDP Shortly After Leaving APC
Former senator Iyabo Obasanjo has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) only a few days after she exited the All Progressives Congress (APC). Party officials greeted her at the PDP secretariat as she arrived from a recent trip to the United States.
Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, said she believes the PDP has a strong chance of winning the 2027 Ogun State governorship election. She publicly expressed her support for the party’s candidate, Ladi Adebutu, and promised to share more details about her political concerns at a later date.
She also noted that she still has several complaints she intends to raise, though she did not elaborate on them during the welcome event. Her departure from the APC came after she said she felt sidelined and unfairly treated by party leaders.
Obasanjo criticised the manner in which the APC selected its governorship candidate, Solomon Adeola, claiming that some of her supporters were barred from participating in the process. Although she initially accepted the decision and showed public support, subsequent discussions failed to produce any resolution.
“I actually have a lot to say; there are many people we will call out, but I will wait until an official welcome back into the party is organised,” she stated. She added, “I want to greet our deputy governorship candidate. I am convinced you will be our next deputy governor. I thank our incoming governor from 2027, Hon Oladipupo Adebutu, because he has really tried to become the governor of the state for the first, second and third time. But this time, God is saying that he will be our next governor now that I am joining the party.”
Iyabo Obasanjo had joined the APC earlier in the year after leaving the PDP. Prior to that, she served as Ogun State health commissioner from 2003 to 2007 and later represented Ogun Central in the Senate from 2007 to 2011 before moving abroad following her re‑election loss.
