The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognized Major Agbo as the national chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), succeeding the factional chairman Bala Yusuf.
A check by journalists confirmed that Agbo’s name now appears on INEC’s portal as the party’s national chairman. The commission also updated its records with the names of other members of the NNPP National Working Committee, including National Secretary Olaposi Oginni, National Treasurer Prince Adetoyese Omokanye, National Financial Secretary Anthony Apugo, and National Legal Adviser Asuquo Ibok.
Leadership Crisis Background
This development marks a significant turn in the leadership crisis that has plagued the opposition party since the 2023 general election, when rival factions each claimed control of the NNPP.
Agbo’s Statement
Addressing journalists, Agbo described the update on INEC’s portal as a validation of his leadership and a fresh beginning for the party.
“I am pleased to formally announce that the complete upload of the duly recognised National Working Committee under my leadership has been concluded by INEC,” he said. “This development reinforces the legitimacy of our party’s leadership and strengthens our preparations for future political activities. Indeed, the era of betrayal of trust is over as Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima have since gone their ways. We wish them all the best in their future political endeavours.”
He added, “We were sure that the judiciary would do justice to the issues and we are indeed not disappointed. They proved to be truly the last hope of the common man, rose to the occasion, defended our democracy and rule of law in the face of avoidable threats.”
Preparations for the 2027 General Elections
Following INEC’s recognition, Agbo said the NNPP has begun preparations for the 2027 general elections. The party has commenced the process of uploading candidates in line with the electoral body’s timetable and guidelines after receiving the required access code.
“Following this achievement, the party has commenced the process of uploading candidates for the 2027 general elections in accordance with the timetable and guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission after receiving the access code recently,” he stated. “We are determined to present competent, credible and people‑oriented candidates who will champion good governance and national development in line with our manifesto. The NNPP remains open to every patriotic Nigerian who desires positive change.”
Call for Security Collaboration
The NNPP chairman also urged stronger collaboration between the Federal Government and security agencies to address the country’s security challenges.
He said, “We must join hands with the Federal Government to tackle the challenge of insecurity in Nigeria. However, we call on the FG and all security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve inter‑agency collaboration and deploy every lawful means necessary to restore peace and protect the lives of Nigerians.”
Appeal to INEC
Agbo also urged INEC to remain steadfast, impartial and committed to conducting free, fair, credible and transparent elections in 2027.
“The confidence of Nigerians in the democratic process depends largely on the integrity, independence and professionalism of the electoral umpire,” he noted.
Yusuf’s Response
When contacted for a reaction, Bala Yusuf confirmed that he was aware of the development but said he was not in a position to speak on the matter in detail.
“Yes, I am aware. However, I don’t have enough time to discuss the details. Right now, I am in transit. When I come to Abuja, I will release a statement,” he stated.
