Former President Goodluck Jonathan Denies ₦500bn Offer to Contest Peter Obi
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed a media report alleging he was offered ₦500 billion to run against Labour Party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi, describing the story as false and intended to sow division.
The denial came through his Special Adviser on Media, Dr Ikechukwu Eze, who labelled the publication baseless and a deliberate attempt to drag the former president into unnecessary controversy.
In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, Eze urged Nigerians to ignore the report, which originated from an obscure website and falsely attributed the claim to Jonathan.
He stressed that the article lacked essential journalistic details such as the time, place, individuals involved or the source of the alleged offer.
Eze described the piece as exhibiting all the hallmarks of fake news, crafted to mislead the public and heighten political tension ahead of upcoming elections.
He warned that as political activity intensifies, misinformation and false attributions are becoming more common, urging citizens to verify sensational claims before sharing them.
The former president’s spokesman concluded by reiterating that the story was fabricated to associate Jonathan with claims he never made.
