Former President Goodluck Jonathan Denies ₦500 Billion Offer to Run Against Peter Obi
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has rejected a media report alleging that he was offered ₦500 billion to contest against the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, in an alleged bid to split votes in the South‑South.
Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media, Dr Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan described the story as false, baseless and a calculated effort to drag the former president into political controversy.
In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, Eze urged Nigerians to disregard the publication, which he said originated from a little‑known website and falsely attributed the claim to Jonathan.
He added that the report lacked credibility and failed to meet basic journalistic standards, noting that it did not state where or when the alleged comment was made, who was present, or who supposedly made the offer.
Eze said the publication bore all the hallmarks of fake news deliberately crafted to mislead the public and create unnecessary political tension.
According to him, the story was fabricated to associate Jonathan with claims he never made.
He warned that as political activities intensify ahead of future elections, the spread of misinformation and false attributions has become increasingly common.
Eze called on Nigerians to disregard the report in its entirety and to verify sensational claims before sharing them.
