Dutch football referee Rob Dieperink has died at the age of 38, just weeks after being dropped from FIFA’s list of officials for the 2026 World Cup.
KNVB Confirms Passing
The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) announced his death on Sunday, though no cause was disclosed. In a statement, the association described Dieperink as a highly valued referee and a kind, dedicated colleague.
Background on the World Cup Removal
Dieperink had been selected to serve as a video assistant referee (VAR) for the 2026 World Cup. However, FIFA withdrew his appointment in May after he was arrested by the Metropolitan Police in April on suspicion of sexual assault involving a teenage boy.
The police investigation concluded without charges, citing insufficient evidence to meet the required threshold. No further action was taken.
Dieperink’s Career and Reaction
Before the World Cup controversy, Dieperink had officiated in the Eredivisie since 2017 and acted as VAR at Euro 2024. He also worked the VAR role during Crystal Palace’s 3‑0 Europa Conference League quarter‑final first‑leg win over Fiorentina on 9 April.
Speaking to De Telegraaf after his removal, Dieperink maintained his innocence, saying he had fully cooperated with the police, FIFA, UEFA and the KNVB. He expressed disappointment at losing the World Cup appointment but thanked the KNVB for its support.
Police Statement
The Metropolitan Police said officers responded to a report of a sexual assault at an address on Wellesley Road in Croydon on 9 April. A man in his 30s was arrested, and after reviewing CCTV footage and digital devices, detectives concluded there was not enough evidence to proceed, resulting in no further action.
