ADC Declines to Confirm Amaechi as Atiku’s Running Mate
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has refused to confirm speculation that its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has selected former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi as his vice‑presidential nominee for the 2027 election.
Several media outlets had reported that Atiku had settled on Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor, as his running mate. When approached for comment, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi said he could not verify the claims.
“I don’t have that confirmation. I cannot confirm for you at this time,” Abdullahi stated during a telephone interview with Premium Times.
Asked whether the selection process was still ongoing, the spokesperson declined to elaborate, reiterating that he simply did not possess the information requested.
Abdullahi nevertheless assured that the party would eventually announce a vice‑presidential candidate, adding, “Definitely we will have a running mate. But to confirm specifically the question you asked me, I’m not able to confirm now. If I have any further information, I will let you know.”
Background on the Speculation
The rumours gained traction after Atiku secured the ADC presidential ticket, defeating Amaechi and other contenders in the party’s primary. Analysts suggested the pairing would create a North‑East/South‑South balance, with Atiku hailing from Adamawa State and Amaechi from Rivers State.
ADC chieftain Chukwuemeka Eze also weighed in, dismissing assertions that Amaechi had rejected a possible vice‑presidential offer. Eze noted that the former transport minister had only said, after the primary, that nobody had approached him about the position.
Eze urged party members to avoid unfounded speculation that could sow confusion or tension within the ADC.
