Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has said that she would likely be unemployed today if she had not found success in music.
From Uncertainty to Stardom
Looking back on her journey, the 24‑year‑old singer explained that music completely changed the direction of her life. She recalled the excitement she felt when she learned that Don Jazzy and the Mavin Records team had been listening to her tracks before she was even signed.
“I was thrilled to discover they were already vibing to my sound,” she said, adding that the moment felt like a validation of her talent.
The Reality of Fame
Despite her success, Ayra Starr admits that fame brings its own set of challenges. She confessed that she sometimes wishes the public knew less about her because she tends to speak openly during interviews.
“Once the camera turns on, I can’t stop talking. I feel like I overshare,” she explained, highlighting the tension between her candid personality and her desire for privacy.
Life Before Music
Born Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, Ayra Starr joined Mavin Records in 2020 after being discovered by Don Jazzy through social media. She believes that without her music career she would have been stuck at home, simply “vibing in my mother’s house, eating my mother’s food,” and would not have pursued content creation either.
Since signing with Mavin, she has become one of Nigeria’s biggest musical exports, releasing acclaimed projects such as “19 & Dangerous” and “The Year I Turned 21,” while earning numerous awards, nominations, and international recognition.
