SDP Dumps Ekiti Governorship Candidate, Backs Oyebanji
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ekiti State has withdrawn its support for its governorship candidate, Peter Obafemi, and thrown its weight behind Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
SDP Chairman Bamikole announced the decision after consultations with party leaders, stakeholders and members across the 16 local government areas of the state.
He said the party reviewed all candidates and concluded that Governor Oyebanji had demonstrated strong leadership and a commitment to Ekiti’s development.
The endorsement also extends to Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye, as the SDP believes the current administration merits another term in office.
Bamikole noted that Obafemi’s lack of engagement with party members and the absence of a visible campaign after emerging as the party’s flag bearer through a substitution process influenced the decision.
The SDP could no longer back a candidate who did not show sufficient readiness for a major electoral contest.
He added that the achievements of the Oyebanji administration, including ongoing projects and programmes, played a major role in the party’s choice.
The governor’s approach to governance and continued development efforts convinced the SDP that supporting his re‑election serves the interests of Ekiti residents.
The party has directed its structures and supporters statewide to work for Oyebanji’s victory at the polls.
Bamikole expressed confidence that the SDP could contribute thousands of votes to strengthen the governor’s re‑election bid.
