Ruben Amorim Appointed AC Milan Head Coach Six Months After Manchester United Exit
Ruben Amorim has been named the new head coach of AC Milan, just six months after his departure from Manchester United.
The Portuguese manager moves to Serie A after Milan finished fifth in the previous season and missed out on UEFA Champions League qualification. He succeeds Massimiliano Allegri and has reportedly signed a two‑year contract that includes an option to extend his stay until 2029.
Speaking after his appointment, Amorim said: “There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and coaching AC Milan has always been one of mine. I know exactly what this club represents: history, prestige and an extraordinary global fanbase. It is a challenge I embrace with pride and enthusiasm, fully aware of what these colours mean. I can’t wait to get started and to experience every day the passion that drives AC Milan.”
At 41 years old, Amorim began his managerial career in Portugal with Casa Pia, Braga and Sporting CP before taking over at Old Trafford in November 2024. His tenure at United lasted 14 months and ended in January after a difficult campaign that saw the club record its lowest‑ever Premier League finish and fail to qualify for Europe.
Following Amorim’s exit, former midfielder Michael Carrick stepped in as interim manager before being appointed permanently. Carrick guided United back into the Champions League places last season after a strong finish to the campaign.
Amorim’s return to management also relieves United of the obligation to continue paying the remainder of his compensation package after his dismissal. His first meeting with his former club is already scheduled, with AC Milan set to face Manchester United in a pre‑season friendly in Poland on 15 August.
