Hossam Hassan Sets Sights on World Cup Glory
Egypt’s head coach Hossam Hassan has made it clear that merely qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is not enough for the Pharaohs. He insists the team must push further and leave a lasting impression on football’s biggest stage.
The former Egyptian striker, who played for his country at the 1990 World Cup, believes the current squad possesses the quality to achieve what previous generations could not and finally establish Egypt among the sport’s elite nations.
Reflecting on Personal Experience
Speaking ahead of Egypt’s opening match against Belgium, Hassan recalled his own World Cup journey and outlined his ambitions for the tournament.
“Reaching the World Cup as a player and coach is a great achievement,” said Hassan.
“Egypt deserves its rightful place in world football. In 1990 we did something good, although we didn’t follow through on it.
We played well, came close to advancing, but it was not meant to be. I hope, God willing, we can finally break through.”
Hassan believes the passion surrounding football in Egypt can inspire the team to achieve that long‑standing goal.
“Football in Egypt is not just a game; it is life. Whenever Egyptians see the flag, they rally around it, especially when it comes to football. Living up to the expectations of our people and fans is what matters most to me,” he added.
Praise for Captain Mohamed Salah
The coach also highlighted the importance of captain Mohamed Salah, describing the Liverpool forward as one of the finest players in world football.
“Mohamed Salah has broken countless records around the world,” Hassan noted.
“He is among the best players globally, and I hope he scores more than I did. The most important thing is for us to win and score goals for Egypt.”
