Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that he will step down after the club’s final Premier League match of the season against Aston Villa.
Guardiola’s Farewell Message
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Guardiola said there is no single reason for his decision, adding that he simply feels it is the right time to move on.
“Nothing is eternal,” he remarked, “but the feeling, the people, the memories and the love I have for Manchester City will last forever.”
A Decade of Triumphs
Guardiola arrived at the Etihad in 2016, succeeding Manuel Pellegrini. Although his first season ended without a trophy, the team quickly became England’s dominant force.
Under his leadership, City reached the 100‑point mark in 2017‑18 and scored a record 106 goals that season. The 2022‑23 campaign saw them secure a historic Treble – Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League – making them only the second English side to achieve the feat.
City also became the first club to win four consecutive league titles, cementing Guardiola’s place among the greatest managers in the sport’s history.
Who Might Replace Him?
The club has indicated that former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, who previously worked alongside Guardiola at City, is the leading candidate to take over the hot seat.
Guardiola’s Ongoing Connection
Although he will leave the managerial role, Manchester City confirmed that Guardiola will remain with the organisation as a global ambassador for the City Football Group.
Before his tenure in England, Guardiola won three Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich and built a legendary Barcelona side that collected numerous La Liga and Champions League trophies. As a player, he earned Olympic gold with Spain in 1992 and enjoyed a decorated career at Barcelona.
