Nigerian Afrobeat artist Seun Kuti has sparked widespread discussion after asserting that spending one billion dollars in a single lifetime is virtually impossible, regardless of how lavishly one lives.
Seun Kuti Claims a Billion Dollars Is Impossible to Exhaust
During a conversation about wealth and consumer habits, the musician explained that the human mind is not equipped to comprehend the sheer magnitude of a billion-dollar fortune.
He noted that many people fail to recognize the vast gap between millions and billions due to the enormity of the numbers.
“You cannot finish one billion dollars in this lifetime. I go to buy something and they say this costs 13 billion naira, 12 billion naira,” Seun Kuti remarked.
“The human brain did not evolve to process such huge numbers. One million seconds equals 11 days, while one billion seconds is 11,000 days, which is 37 years. If you have one billion dollars, even if you buy private jets or anything else, the money will not run out,” he added.
The Remarks Reignite Discussions on Wealth Disparity
The statement has reignited conversations across social media regarding wealth concentration, extravagant spending, and economic inequality, particularly in developing nations such as Nigeria, where millions grapple with inflation and soaring living expenses.
Seun Kuti has a history of criticising capitalism and the hoarding of excessive wealth.
In 2024, the singer also raised questions about why a tiny fraction of the global population controls the majority of resources while poverty persists across Africa and other parts of the world.
