Segun Showunmi, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has dismissed the idea that a single presidential term is sufficient to resolve Nigeria’s complex challenges.
During a TVC interview on Thursday, Showunmi stated his position clearly. He called anyone suggesting a single term to fix Nigeria’s problems “either a liar or a fraud.”
He referenced the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan. This case, Showunmi noted, highlights the impossibility of such claims.
Showunmi’s Stance on Single Term Presidency
Showunmi elaborated on his strong conviction. He said, “Anyone who says one term is okay for them to take care of all the challenges bedevilling us as a nation is either a liar or a fraud.”
He criticized those who “boast about how easy it is to do a very difficult job,” yet “won’t tell you how they are going to do it.”
The PDP chieftain pointed to Goodluck Jonathan’s presidency as an example. Jonathan, he noted, took over from Umaru Yar’Adua.
Showunmi recalled that Jonathan completed Yar’Adua’s term. He then served his legitimate term from 2011 to 2015. “How easy was it for us to get him to do that extra one?” Showunmi questioned.
He further argued that the attempt to force Jonathan into a second full term created significant turmoil. This, Showunmi claimed, “destroyed one of the major parties that has not recovered till today.”
