Spanish football manager Rafa Benítez has been confirmed as the new head coach of Panathinaikos FC. This appointment marks his return to management after nearly two years away from the sidelines.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano broke the news on Friday. He announced: “Rafa Benítez signs in as new Panathinaikos head coach, agreement sealed today with the Spanish manager.”
Greek and international media report the 65-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract. This deal ranks among the most lucrative in Greek football history. It represents Benítez’s 17th managerial position.
Panathinaikos currently sit seventh in the 14-team Super League Greece. They have nine points from six matches. The club trails leaders PAOK by eight points but holds a game in hand. Management hopes Benítez will spark a revival in their title challenge.
The experienced Spaniard brings elite-level credentials to Athens. His previous clubs include Valencia, Napoli, Real Madrid, and Newcastle United.
Benítez remains legendary for Liverpool’s 2005 UEFA Champions League triumph. His team famously overcame a 3-0 halftime deficit against AC Milan in Istanbul.
