Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, recently shared his views on the nation’s music industry. He claims much of the assistance offered within it is purely transactional. Portable asserts that this differs significantly from his own charitable efforts, which extend beyond artists to embrace the less privileged.
The “Zazu Zeh” crooner also criticized a common industry practice. Portable highlighted how artists are often branded as “ungrateful.” This happens when they seek independence from those who initially ‘used them for business’. According to Portable, such a label is unfair.
Portable spoke about celebrity engagement with fans and upcoming talents. He observed that many Nigerian celebrities rarely acknowledge fans who promote their songs. “But I repost every positive video about me,” Portable stated. He also claimed that, unlike many prominent figures, he freely helps new artists with features. He boldly declared, “I have helped more people in the music industry.” He named Don Jazzy, Olamide, Wizkid, and Davido as those he believes he has surpassed.
Defining genuine assistance, Portable offered a clear distinction. He described true help as taking in a homeless person, providing shelter, clothing, and food. It also includes funding their first studio sessions. “Anything other than that,” Portable declared, “you are just doing business.” He concluded that many individuals in the industry claim to offer help. However, they are simply conducting business transactions.
Portable further challenged the narrative of ungrateful artists. He argued that musicians are often deemed ungrateful. This happens when they decide to advance independently after being leveraged for business. “How are they ungrateful?” he questioned. “You only used them for business.”
