Political analyst Mahdi Shehu has delivered a pointed message to politicians from Nigeria’s South-East region. This follows the life imprisonment sentence given to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Justice James Olawole Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja imposed the life sentence on Kanu for terrorism charges on November 20, 2025. The ruling marked a significant milestone in the prolonged legal struggle surrounding the IPOB leader.
Shehu’s Response to Court Decision
Responding to the verdict, Shehu addressed South-East political leaders through his official X (formerly Twitter) account. He highlighted their “quiet yet crucial roles” during Kanu’s legal challenges.
In his social media post, Shehu stated: “DESERVING CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL SOUTH-EAST POLITICIANS FOR A JOB WELL DONE.” He suggested regional leaders could now “rest easy” following their “most significant political threat’s” conviction.
Alleged Complicity and Betrayal
Shehu claimed numerous governors, senators, and ministers from the South-East subtly contributed to Kanu’s predicament. He accused them of acting from “cowardice, fear, greed, and betrayal.”
The commentator noted Kanu was perceived as a political figure who could diminish their popularity. This fear reportedly motivated some leaders to remain silent throughout the legal proceedings.
Achebe’s Wisdom and Karma
Shehu invoked writings by late literary icon Chinua Achebe to underscore his warnings. He cited passages including:
“The hill may not know, but it is on the ground”
“No man however great was greater than his people; no one ever won judgment against his people”
“The death that will kill a man begins as an appetite”
Shehu cautioned politicians “feasting with a lion” would face repercussions. He predicted their celebrations would be brief as “karma will catch up with them.”
Prediction of Future Release
Despite the sentence, Shehu contended Kanu’s eventual release remains inevitable. He cited figures like Sunday Igboho and “repentant Boko Haram leaders” who regained freedom despite serious allegations.
The analyst noted Nigeria has witnessed drug lords and treasury looters regain liberty. He concluded with the declaration: “A DAY IS COMING.”
