Popular Nigerian comedian, Freedom Okpetoritse Atsepoyi, widely known as Mr. Jollof, has publicly recounted his recent physical altercation. The incident involved social media critic Martins Otese, also known as VeryDarkMan. It occurred inside an aircraft on Monday, November 17.
Mr. Jollof stated he acted purely in self-defense. He claimed VeryDarkMan approached him provocatively. He added that “3000 mg” of blows were delivered to the social media critic during their clash.
Mr. Jollof Offers Apologies
Following the widely reported incident, Mr. Jollof issued a sincere apology. He addressed the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), United Nigeria Airlines, and all passengers aboard the flight.
“I want to use this medium to sincerely apologise to the NCAA, United Nigeria Airlines, and the passengers that boarded the airline,” he stated. “I was only defending myself. You guys saw what happened, and I am very sorry if I delayed your appointment. Pardon me. This isn’t my kind of person. It will never happen again.”
He extended his apologies to his family. “To my lovely wife, I know you’re proud of me. To my kids, I am sorry, Daddy will never do this again,” he said. “To my boss, I am very sorry, this isn’t my kind of person.”
How The Altercation Started
Explaining the genesis of the fight, Mr. Jollof stated that VeryDarkMan initiated the confrontation. While Mr. Jollof was seated in the aircraft, VeryDarkMan allegedly began making inflammatory comments directed at him.
Mr. Jollof quoted VeryDarkMan as saying, “If we come down from this plane, I go slap you. Make God punish your papa. I fit commot from here now come slap you.” Mr. Jollof’s response was a calm, “Behave yourself.”
He further explained that VeryDarkMan then walked directly towards him. Feeling threatened, Mr. Jollof said he immediately had to defend himself, leading to the physical confrontation.
Why He Bit VeryDarkMan
Addressing the specific action of biting VeryDarkMan on the chest during the fight, Mr. Jollof offered an unusual justification. He drew a parallel to a renowned boxer.
“Mike Tyson the fighter, he used what God gave him,” Mr. Jollof explained. He concluded with a local adage: “When you carry knife come gun battle, anything when you see you go take am.” This implied he used any means available for defense in a perceived unequal struggle.
