Former Defence Minister and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bello Haliru Mohammed, has formally resigned from the party and retired from partisan politics. This decision concludes his extensive public service career spanning over four decades.
A Decision After Deep Reflection
The former PDP Board of Trustees chairman stated his resignation followed careful consideration and a sense of fulfillment after decades dedicated to nation-building. Mohammed, who recently turned 80, believes it’s time for him to step aside and allow younger leaders to guide Nigeria’s future.
“It has been a rare privilege to serve our nation and our party in various capacities,” Mohammed stated. “From my early days in public service to my tenures as Minister of Communications and Defence, to serving as Acting National Chairman and later Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, I’ve consistently worked toward Nigeria’s unity, progress, and democratic growth.”
Pillar of PDP’s Political Legacy
Mohammed is widely recognized as a foundational figure who shaped the PDP during its tenure as Nigeria’s ruling party. His distinguished career includes significant roles both within party politics and national governance:
- Minister of Communications (1999-2001)
- Acting PDP National Chairman (2011)
- Minister of Defence (2011-2012)
- PDP Board of Trustees Chairman (2015)
Beyond party leadership, Mohammed contributed to public administration, national security reforms, and political restructuring during Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.
Transition to Elder Statesman Role
Reflecting on his career, Mohammed acknowledged experiencing Nigeria’s democratic evolution through both challenges and successes. He expressed gratitude for his service opportunities and appreciation for colleagues’ support throughout his political journey.
“I have witnessed Nigeria’s trials and triumphs,” he remarked. “Though retiring from active politics, I remain available to offer guidance when needed for our nation’s benefit as an elder statesman.”
