Lagos State authorities have officially registered Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, in the state’s sex offenders database. This follows his completion of a five-year prison sentence for sexually assaulting a minor.
Court Conviction Details
The Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja convicted Baba Ijesha in 2022. He was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. The court sentenced him to five years imprisonment on two charges. Two additional counts carried three-year terms. All sentences ran concurrently.
Debunking Misinformation
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) dismissed false claims circulating online. Reports suggesting Baba Ijesha was cleared of charges were inaccurate. The agency cautioned media outlets and the public. Disseminating false reports could lead to legal action under Section 39 of Lagos Criminal Law.
Appeal Court Decisions
Baba Ijesha secured release last Friday after serving his full sentence. The Court of Appeal upheld his 2021 conviction for sexual assault. However, it overturned older convictions from 2013 and 2014. The Supreme Court later dismissed his appeal attempt. A subsequent request to file a fresh appeal was denied.
Case Background
The case gained national attention in April 2021. Viral footage showed Baba Ijesha assaulting the minor. Comedienne Damilola Adekoya, known as Princess, reported the incident. She serves as the victim’s foster mother. Police subsequently arrested and prosecuted the actor.
During the year-long trial, six prosecution witnesses testified against Baba Ijesha. The defense presented four witnesses. The judge convicted him on four counts of sexual assault and indecent treatment. Two charges were dismissed during proceedings.
Official Confirmation
The DSVA confirmed Baba Ijesha’s inclusion in the sex offenders register. This formal registration aims to protect minors across Lagos State. It allows public access to verified information about convicted offenders.
