Manchester United Coach Ruben Amorim Responds to Ratcliffe's Endorsement, Emphasizing Football's Unpredictability

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has expressed appreciation for Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s public endorsement of his long-term project at the club but emphasized that football is inherently unpredictable and does not adhere to fixed timelines.

Ratcliffe, who now oversees football operations at Manchester United, recently stated in an interview that it could take Amorim up to three years to make a significant impact at Old Trafford. This statement came at a tense period for the club, as United struggles with form, leading to questions about the Portuguese coach’s future.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s match against Liverpool, Amorim acknowledged Ratcliffe’s support but cautioned that football rarely follows a set schedule. “It is really good to hear it, but he tells me all the time, sometimes with a message after games. However, both Jim and I know that football doesn’t work like that,” Amorim stated. “The most important thing is the next game. Even with owners, you cannot control the next day in football.”

United’s chief executive, Omar Berrada, also acknowledged that it has taken longer than anticipated for Amorim to adapt to English football since his arrival from Sporting last November. The 40-year-old has won only 10 of his 34 Premier League matches and has yet to guide United to consecutive league victories this season. They have not finished a match week higher than ninth place.

Despite growing unrest among supporters, Amorim clarified that there is no sense of panic within the club’s Carrington training ground. However, he admitted that he prefers not to rely on public reassurances, as they might make players complacent. “It’s really good to hear it because it helps our fans understand that leadership recognizes it will take time,” he said. “But at the same time, I don’t like it because it gives a feeling that we have time to work things out. I don’t want that feeling in our club. The pressure I place on the team or on myself is much greater than that from outside. In football, especially at big clubs, you need to prove yourself every weekend.”
