A Nigerian woman who took out a ₦1.2 million loan from Opay has attracted widespread attention after revealing the amount she now owes. In a widely‑shared post on X, she described the circumstances that led her to borrow the money.
Lady Speaks Out After Taking an Opay Loan
Known on X as @iam‑Mardiyah, she said she secured the loan shortly after gaining university admission. She used the funds to buy bags and wigs, but later removed the Opay app because the accumulating interest became burdensome. When she reinstalled the app, she discovered a balance of ₦9,608.17. The loan was originally taken on 13 November 2024. She recalled, “I borrowed 1.2 million from OPay to change my phone and get some wigs in my first year, and I deleted the app when the interest kept piling up and they constantly reminded me to pay. After reinstalling it, you won’t believe how much the loan has grown.” Her tweet has amassed more than two million views and provoked a flurry of comments.
Reactions from X Users
Nzeke Chinedu remarked, “If you had invested that money in a business from your first year, you would have progressed much further. Wigs to cover an empty skull.”
Timmy stated, “People often borrow cash for everyday expenses; I assumed loans were meant for business or investment—what do I know?”
Idah noted, “The debt was simply waiting for her return. Deleting the app does not erase the loan.”
Vibe Media commented, “Opay will likely see this as an opportunity to track her down and collect the roughly nine‑meter amount.”
