Tuchel Warns England to Contain Messi’s Silent Assassin Threat
Ahead of England’s World Cup semi‑final clash with Argentina, manager Thomas Tuchel labelled Lionel Messi a “silent assassin” and warned his players that stopping the Argentine talisman will be crucial to reaching the final.
Speaking to ITV Sport, Tuchel expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness, noting the excitement and determination within the camp.
He acknowledged the historic weight of the England‑Argentina rivalry, pointing out that both teams are recognised worldwide for their iconic jerseys, star players, and the significance of the fixture.
Tuchel observed that both sides have displayed remarkable resilience on their path to the last four, suggesting the match will be decided by which team overcomes its challenges most effectively.
The England boss also highlighted Argentina’s experience, noting that many of Scaloni’s players were part of the squad that lifted the trophy four years ago, giving them cohesion, a winning mentality, and genuine confidence.
When asked where Messi ranks among football’s greatest, Tuchel refrained from historical comparisons but conceded that the Argentine belongs at the very top of any list due to his exceptional talent.
Despite his age of 39, Messi remains a constant threat. Tuchel described him as capable of exploding at any moment, delivering a lethal blow even when appearing to walk slowly, and stressed that England must never underestimate his ability to change the game in an instant.
The manager added that Argentina’s teammates often sacrifice their own efforts to preserve Messi’s energy for critical moments, and that England must find a way to limit his influence if they hope to advance.
Tuchel concluded that England’s objective is not to praise or pedestal the star, but to prevent him from dominating the match and securing a place in the final.
